Recap

On April 9, 2015 Penn IUR held its 11th annual Urban Leadership Forum, and presented Urban Leadership Awards to two urban visionaries: Michael A. Nutter, Mayor, City of Philadelphia, and Renee Lewis Glover, Chair, Board of Directors, Habitat for Humanity International and Former President and CEO, Atlanta Housing Authority. The award recognizes exemplary thinkers who have demonstrated the vision to revitalize urban centers, respond to urban crises, and champion urban sustainability in the United States and around the globe.

Since taking office in January 2008, Michael Nutter has vigorously managed city government through the worst recession since the Great Depression by maintaining core services and reducing the Philadelphia’s spending. “I set some ambitious goals on the first day [in office as mayor], and said that we would be the number one green city in the United States,” Nutter said. Philadelphia today is now recognized as one of the great, green, and sustainable cites nationally and internationally.

Renee Glover has pioneered master-planned, mixed-use, mixed-income residential development, creating spaces in which people of all socio-economic profiles live together in an amenity rich community. Her work has been modeled widely and is now being used as the redevelopment blueprint by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Glover’s exemplary work has contributed immensely to improved housing, public schools, transit access, and economic development activities.
