Recovering Cities Project

Penn IUR’s Recovering Cities Project is the first research project Penn IUR is undertaking as part of its Cities and Contagion: Lessons from COVID-19 initiative. For this project, Penn IUR is partnering with research institutes around the country to monitor and inform the select cities’ recoveries from the health, economic, and social impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Penn IUR is leading the effort in New York City, the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development at Georgia Tech is leading the effort in Atlanta, and partnerships with other research institutes are being explored for other cities.

Over the coming year, the research institutes will convene small groups of interested parties in each city to observe, discuss, and help shape future responses to recent challenges: pandemic-related public health concerns, economic distress, and the quest for racial equity. While each group will tackle questions relevant to its own city, collectively they will be able to compare the progress of their city relative to others as well as to the nation as a whole.

To help frame discussions, Penn IUR staff, along with research partners in other cities, are preparing “indicator dashboards” of available, updatable data.

New York City

New York City is the pilot city. Penn IUR convened the group of interested parties in September 2020 and prepared the first of the city’s indicator dashboards; updated dashboards will be prepared every other month and available here:

Atlanta

The Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development at Georgia Tech convened the first Atlanta seminar in November 2020.
