On April 7, Penn IUR hosted the 12th annual Urban Leadership Forum. This year the forum, titled “Leading Cities for Shared Prosperity”, celebrated the exemplary leadership of Angela Glover Blackwell, president and CEO of PolicyLink, and Jeremy Nowak, president of J Nowak and Associates. Penn IUR co-director Genie Birch welcomed attendees and made introductory remarks before presenting the awardees.
Angela Glover Blackwell discussed the toxic inequality that the country plaguing the U.S. and the resurgence of what she considers another civil rights movement: the Black Lives Matter effort. Jeremy Nowak spoke from the practitioner perspective and lauded the efforts of research institutions like Penn IUR that aim to connect academia with professional practice to answer questions regarding urban issues. He spoke about the importance of fiscal sustainability in the contemporary American city.
After the awardees spoke, they engaged in a conversation moderated by Penn IUR Co-Director, Susan Wachter. They remarked on the importance of leadership and institutional innovation and change to bring about real, sustainable progress for urban areas.
