Event Recap

On February 1, Penn IUR and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia hosted "Research Symposium on the Community Reinvestment Act," an event about the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) featuring panels of leading experts. Panelists discussed using metrics and evaluating performances, updating assessment areas, and improving the effectiveness of the CRA. Participants then had the opportunity to engage in conversations with panelists and other audience members about ideas for modernizing the CRA.

Penn IUR Co-Director Susan Wachter offered opening remarks and moderated a panel discussion entitled "Effectiveness of the Community Reinvestment Act: Past, Present and Future." Additional symposium speakers included Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Patrick Harker, and Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta President Raphael Bostic.

In her presentation titled “ Strengthening the Community Reinvestment Act: What are we Learning?” Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard described the forum as “one part of an extensive outreach effort [the Federal Reserve is] undertaking to gather the best ideas for improving implementation of the Community Reinvestment Act.” She said, “We aim to promote more CRA activity, not less. We think that simplifying and clarifying the regulations while strengthening local community engagement will help us accomplish that goal.”
