John Paul Farmer

Global Head of Public Sector, Stripe President, Tomorrow.City USA

John Paul Farmer is the Global Head of Public Sector at Stripe, where he leads government modernization efforts across the 50+ countries in which the company operates. He is also the President of Tomorrow.City USA and sits on the board of directors at Sand Technologies.

John served as the 3rd Chief Technology Officer of New York City. As NYC CTO, he created the Big Apple's Digital Service, Innovation Fellows, and Digital Reserve. John also produced pioneering blueprints such as a first-in-the-nation AI Strategy, an award-winning IoT Strategy, and the highly influential Internet Master Plan.

Previously, he was Director of Microsoft Cities, developing technology products and partnerships to make communities more livable, more vibrant, and more equitable.

In President Barack Obama’s White House, John served as the Senior Advisor for Innovation, helping to catalyze the govtech movement by co-founding and leading the Presidential Innovation Fellows program, and architecting what later became 18F and the US Digital Service. He went on to advise France, Poland, Germany, Mexico, and others on how to replicate these efforts.

John served as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and advised the US Mission to the United Nations on artificial intelligence. John's work has been featured in Fortune, Forbes, WIRED, Fast Company, TechCrunch, the Washington Post, and the Harvard Business Review. He was selected as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Early in his career, John played professional baseball in the minor league systems of the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.

He holds an MBA with honors from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and an AB with honors from Harvard University.
