Overview

This paper examines the U.S. Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery Program, focusing on how winning the DV lottery impacts immigrants from Ghana and Nigeria both before and after migration. It explores the challenges faced by these immigrants and proposes modifications to the program to better support DV migrants, thereby enhancing their potential and improving overall immigrant quality.

Key Message

To optimize the potential of DV migrants and facilitate their successful incorporation into American society, several changes to the U.S. Diversity Visa Lottery Program are necessary. These include creating an exemption for college students to allow them to complete their education before migrating, providing detailed informational brochures, establishing a DV migrant assistance office, and creating a need-based assistance program. Additionally, sending countries like Nigeria and Ghana should develop support programs to aid their citizens in settling successfully in the United States. These modifications will not only improve the quality of life for DV migrants but also contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth and reducing inequalities.
