Winning photo

Bamboo Slum by Mohammad Rakibul Hasan

Description: A floating village constructed over a canal. Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh

For our photo contest on urban informality, we asked for photo submissions that capture the ways that people in urban areas create or use informal systems to survive and thrive. Photos might highlight one or multiple aspects of informality—in housing, work, transportation, food production, education—or any other facet or facets of urban life. We received more than 300 submissions from photographers around the world, depicting various aspects of informality. We asked our panel of expert judges to judge the photos on the following four criteria: 1) adherence/appropriateness to theme of urban informality; 2) power of image; 3) composition; and 4) overall Impression. We are pleased to announce the winning photo (above) and runners-up, as well as to share the powerful images of all ten finalists (below).
