Adwaita is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Anthropology. His research examines the dynamics between plastic recyclers and their municipal managers in Mumbai, with a particular focus on the city's transition away from fossil fuels and petrochemicals. He investigates how efforts to limit plastic circulation affect the lives of plastic waste workers in municipal dumps. The workers often face significant health risks and shorter life spans due to the toxic nature of their work. Despite these challenges, they continue to strive for safer and more lucrative livelihoods, often wary of the reduction initiatives proposed by municipal corporations and transnational agencies. Making use of his training in multimodal methods such as participant observation, interviews, surveys, and community filmmaking, Adwaita explores what environmental transition might look like from the perspective of urban waste workers. Prior to this research, he has collaborated with civil society organizations in Mumbai, focusing on urban habitat, cultural activism, and data democratization.
