Simon Richter is Class of 1965 Endowed Term Professor of Germanic Studies. His research and teaching focus on cultural aspects of the climate emergency, especially with regard to resilience, adaptation, and sustainability in Germany, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and the United States. As an environmental humanist, Richter engages in activities that blur distinctions between traditional scholarship, urban design, and environmental activism. Richter co-directs the Penn Animation as Research Lab. Through his popular Project Poldergeist series of animated videos , Richter has become a contributing voice in ongoing discussions about climate adaptation in the Netherlands. He co-produced "A New Peace of Münster," a documentary about the possibility of climate migration along the Dutch-German border. Recent articles include: "The Translation of Polder: Water Management in Indonesia and the Netherlands" in The Oxford Handbook of Translation and Social Practices"; “Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Forest Community: Three Moments in the Transatlantic History of Academic Forestry” (in press); and “When Climate Policy Bogs Down, Humanities and the Arts Can Move Things Forward” in German Quarterly.
