Announcement August 17, 2015 Monument Lab Brings Together Citizens, Artists, and Public Figures Monument Lab: Creative Speculations for Philadelphia was a Penn IUR public art and urban research project that took place at Philadelphia City Hall from May 15 – June 17, 2015. Through a temporary art installation, public events, and community-sourced research proposals, the project asked and continues to investigate a central guiding question: What is an appropriate monument for the current city of Philadelphia?

Announcement August 17, 2015 New Paper Finds University R&D To Affect Spatial Development of Neighborhoods A new white paper just released by the Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR) finds that university-based research and development (R&D) affects the spatial development of universities, as well as their surrounding urban areas. The paper, titled “From Science Parks to Innovation Districts Research: Facility Development in Legacy Cities on the Northeast Corridor,” explores the spatial aspects of university-led R&D in older, industrial Northeast cities that have experienced significant population and job loss in recent decades.

Announcement April 23, 2015 Penn IUR Co-Director Genie Birch Elected First-Ever President of UN's General Assembly of Partners Eugenie Birch, co-director of the Penn Institute for Urban Research, has been elected as the first president of the new General Assembly of Partners (GAP), a special initiative of the United Nation’s World Urban Campaign. Birch was elected at the GAP’s inaugural meeting, held in Nairobi, Kenya in mid-April. At the same meeting, New Delhi’s Shipra Narang Suri, Vice President of the International Society of City and Regional Planners, was elected as GAP’s vice president.

Announcement February 10, 2015 MUSA Grad Shrobona Karkun's Work Showcased in Esri Map Book MUSA '14 alum, Shrobona Karkun's map presentation, “Application in Urban Spatial Analysis: Mapping Urbanization in Dubai,” was selected for publication in Esri Map Book, Volume 30, which will be distributed at the 2015 ESRI International User Conference. Karkun's maps demonstrate an analysis of aerial imagery using open source remote sensing data to evaluate the change in urbanization in the Emirate of Dubai between 2004 and 2013. This map presentation was completed as part of coursework for a MUSA course in advanced GIS methods, taught by Ken Steif.
