Announcement February 25, 2016 Penn IUR Announces Winner of Photo Contest on Health and the Urban Landscape The winning photo, “Summer’s Day at John Kelly Pool, Fairmount Park, Pa.,” taken by Ben Chrisinger, is a nostalgic-feeling image that depicts the recreational and community-building benefits of urban public pools. The two runners up were: “Schuylkill River Trail” by Rob Lybeck, a moody and arresting shot depicting a runner on the trail, and Teng Teng’s “Spruce Street Harbor Park, Philadelphia,” a vibrant image of toddlers enjoying the waterfront pop-up parks.

Announcement February 10, 2016 Faculty Fellow Spotlight: William Burke-White William Burke-White is a Penn IUR Faculty Fellow, the Richard Perry Professor and Inaugural Director of Penn’s Perry World House and Deputy Dean and Professor of Law in Penn’s Law School. Burke-White joined Penn in 2005 and has been a Deputy Dean of the Law School since 2011. From 2009-2011, he served on the Policy Planning Staff of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. Burke-White has written extensively in the fields of international law and institutions, with a focus on international criminal and international economic law. His current research explores gaps in the global governance system and the challenges of international legal regulation in a world of rising powers and divergent interests.

Announcement December 14, 2015 Learn More About Open Streets Philly Open Streets PHL was founded to advance the vision of providing free and fun recreation to all members of the community by temporarily closing select streets to vehicle traffic while opening them up to endless possibilities of people-powered movement. The Open Streets PHL movement in Philadelphia grew from the City’s experience with Pope Francis’ visit in September 2015, which necessitated widespread road closures throughout Center City and West Philadelphia. Though the road closure created a disruption that negatively impacted many residents and business owners, it also opened up the city’s imagination to the prospect of enjoying our roadways in the absence of motor vehicles. Parents played in the street with their children; men and women ran, cycled, and walked along roadways typically clogged with cars; and people of all ages came out to enjoy a space at once familiar and brand new.

Announcement November 11, 2015 Faculty Spotlight: Devesh Kapur Devesh Kapur was appointed Director of Penn’s Center for the Advanced Study of India (CASI) in 2006. He is a Penn IUR Faculty Fellow, Professor of Political Science at Penn and holds the Madan Lal Sobti Chair for the Study of Contemporary India. Prior to arriving at Penn, Kapur was Associate Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin, and before that the Frederick Danziger Associate Professor of Government at Harvard. His research focuses on India’s political economy, international migration and international financial institutions, and political and economic change in developing countries, especially India.

Announcement October 12, 2015 Penn IUR First Annual Scavenger Hunt to Highlight Penn Urban History and Resources The Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR) is pleased to announce its first annual scavenger hunt, a unique event to be held this afternoon on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus. The scavenger hunt will allow participants to explore the unique urban history of Penn’s campus and learn more about urban-focused resources and opportunities at Penn. The event, co-sponsored by the Urban Studies program, the Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF) and the Student Sustainability Association at Penn (SSAP), will allow participants to explore the Penn campus through a Twitter-based scavenger hunt. After receiving clues via Twitter, participants (either as individuals or in groups) will document their scavenger hunt and Penn’s urban history through photos and tweets. The event will culminate in a celebration and reception in a location that will be disclosed via clues.
